Election Night Elation

Words can barely express the excitement we feel as our government moves in a direction we’ve been waiting for far too long. Some of this feeling was culminated in the East Village on 8th St. between 1st Ave. and Ave. A after the election results were clear. People poured out into streets to celebrate: dancing, singing and chanting. The waving of American flags felt like something different and more magical to me than it had ever before. People even sang “The Star Spangled Banner” in unison, and chanted “Yes We Can,” in between dancing to Stevie Wonder, Jackson 5, Daft Punk and Justice songs being blasted out of the windows by some clever fellow with a really good and loud sound system. When the cops showed up with megaphones to try to clear the streets for traffic, it wasn’t long before they gave up and stood on the edges of the streets just watching and advising cars to head another direction. One taxi driver who was stuck just turned off his car and got out and started dancing too. I bet similar things happened all over the city and all over the country, because
